Emergency Severe Weather Sheltering

When specific weather conditions exist, Benton County contracts with partners to provide severe weather overflow sheltering for unhoused people. These extreme weather events are rare; emergency sheltering services provide for people who are not able to access current Benton County shelters. When thresholds are met, outreach teams work to identify individuals in need of this service.

The decision to start emergency weather sheltering is based on the National Weather Service (NWS) forecast, which is issued by 8:00 a.m. each day. Overflow sheltering may be activated when the forecast indicates any of the following winter severe weather conditions:

• Low temperatures:
  • 29° F or less
  • Lasting for 4 or more hours
  • Between the hours of 8:00 PM and 7:00 AM

• Snow accumulation:
  • More than 1 inch
  • Within a 24-hour period

• Freezing rain:
  • Lasting for 4 or more hours
  • Between the hours of 8:00 PM and 7:00 AM
